Savannah Spotlight Episode 1: Shining a Light on Gilliard & Co. and the Blue Ribbon Walk
At Live Like Locals, we believe the heart of Savannah shines brightest through the people who work every day to lift others up. That’s why we’re excited to launch our brand-new video podcast series — Savannah Spotlight, hosted by Renee LaSalle and co-host Michelle Horne.
In our first episode, we sit down with Whitney Gilliard, founder of Gilliard & Co., a Savannah nonprofit providing housing and support to young adults aging out of the foster care system. Their mission is powerful, their impact is real — and they need the community’s support more than ever.
Meet Whitney Gilliard: From Foster Youth to Fierce Advocate
Whitney’s story is deeply personal. A former foster youth herself, Whitney aged out of the system at 21 years old. Thanks to the support of her foster parents, she was able to overcome the challenges many in her position face — including homelessness, trauma, and systemic neglect.
Today, through Gilliard & Co., she’s making sure other young adults have the housing, resources, and support they need to thrive after foster care. Serving youth ages 18 to 21 across Georgia, Gilliard & Co. gives these young people not just a roof over their heads, but a chance at a brighter future.
“When you are 17 or 18, you are still a child,” Whitney reminds us. “We can either help now — or pay for it later.”
Why Supporting Foster Youth Matters
Every year, thousands of young people age out of foster care without a family to lean on. Without support, many face staggering odds:
-
Higher risks of homelessness
-
Increased likelihood of incarceration
-
Barriers to education and employment
Gilliard & Co. steps in before these outcomes become reality — offering housing, life skills training, mentorship, and crucial support.
For just $25 to $30 a month, community members can help cover the cost of essentials like clothing, electricity bills, and educational expenses for these young adults. It’s a small investment that makes a life-changing difference.

Together, we can be the safety net that too many young adults age out of. Let’s show them that in Savannah and the Lowcountry, they are seen, supported, and celebrated.
We could not make series like the Savannah Spotlight possible without the support of Horne Law Firm and Miro Luxury Apartments.
